Interview with Þrymr (Trym Torson)

Today we have a chat with Trym Torson, known for being the drummer of Emperor, ex-drummer of Enslaved and much more. We discovered that he is dedicating himself to a new cinematic / ambient project which, although completely outside from what he is known for by his fans, will not fail to excite new and old followers of music inspired by the epic sagas of Northern Europe! Over to Trym!

So dear Trym, can you introduce to your italian fans your brand new project named Þrymr? Saga Of the North will be released in physical form next november, right?

Yes, that is correct. It will be released in a limited edition version both on cd and vinyl. There will be a 12-page booklet, poster, etc. and it will be released in November this year. The music is movie themed based, of an imaginary film of a Viking village being attacked by roaming warlords. There will be a total of 8 tracks.

What equipment did you use to record Saga Of the North?

Almost everything is vst instrument software, I just added some acoustic drums a couple of places. The DAW i use, is Studio One 6 by presonus. I also use a Presonus Studio live series III 64S mixer. Everything running on a Mac Studio. My main source of sounds is usually Native Instruments, but also several others like IK multimedia, Spitfire Audio etc.

What kind of connections do you have with the cinema / soundtracks world?

I dont really have any direct connections with the cinema word.

Which kind of musical education did you follow in your life and which instruments can you play?

I did not really have any musical education. I learned to play drums by my self, and the same with guitars. My Grandmother was a piano teacher, so I learned to play from her, but unfortunately I did not spend enough time to learn notes properly.

What kind of music do you like to listen to apart from metal?

I do listen to quite a lot of different styles of music. It can be anything from ambient, classical, rock, techno, jazz, soundtracks and so on.

Which are your fondest memories of playing with Enslaved and the scene back then?

Our first European tour with Marduk back in ’94 was a great experience, and we had such a great time. It was also a special moment when we recorded Vikingligr Veldi in the mighty Grieghallen, and the producer Pytten was helping us to get everything the way we wanted.

What do you recall about the early period of playing with Emperor?

I remember we where all wanting to go in the same direction, and no obstacles where too big. So even thou things could be quite chaotic, we all had the same focus on what had to be done to achieve our goals. But we also had to do everything our self.

Which are your musical projects at the moment?

I’m finalizing all the songs for Saga Of the North. I have also started to work on another solo project who will be called The Ominous Void. This will be a very dark ambient style of atmosphere soundscape, probably only 2 tracks around 20 min each.

I have also signed a contact to make music for a new game that will develop over the next 2-3 years. In total, I will have to make 120 min of music themes. There will be an announcement later when the project is on the way, starting on March 1st.

Do you have any memories – both musical and extra-musical – related to Italy?

I always enjoy playing in Italy, and this is also my favorite place to go on holiday. I think its a combination of nice landscapes, great history, lots of cultural places to visit, amazing food and vine, and of course the ice cream and the great people living there.

Which final message and greeting would you send out to your Italian fans?

We have always had a great time coming to Italy, and thats because of the welcoming and dedicated fans we are so lucky to have. Thank you for your support all this time, Grazie Mille, forza Ferrari!
